Intonation adulation:
Thanks to the Fender Support page, linking to setup information on guitars, I setup my guitar this past weekend, and loosened the truss rod on the neck. Since this telecaster is a set neck telecaster, it's a bit easier to adjust, though a bit more time consuming. You really have to put a setting down, and then wait for it to conform to that setting, which can take a couple of days.
I've been having horrible problems with fret buzz, and the ability to play a lot of the notes on the fret board. My first instinct is that there isn't enough relief to the neck, so I loosen the truss rod, bend the neck a bit, and wait. That doesn't really seem to do much, so I (dreadedly) raise the action, and voila. Lessened fret buzz. I still have a bit of a problem though, but I know that's a function of the nut. I'll either have to figure out some way to fill the nut, and re-file it, or replace it, because no matter how high the action is, I'll always have a bit of fret buzz at the first fret. I followed the instructions for fine tuning intonation, and it worked like a charm. The result: a guitar that I setup myself, that plays infinitely better than before I tried setting it up. In the future, I'd actually like to get an automotive feeler, to get very accurate measurements. I was just eyeballing these as I only had a ruler that went to 1/32nds, and really I need 1/64ths to be really accurate.
I'll have to see how it operates at rehearsal tonight... Should be interesting. We'll either be hammering home our set for the 22nd, or starting to lay scratch tracks for our recording we want to do. Somehow, I'll have to find the energy for all this...
